Police also used water cannons to disperse protesters who set several fires and set off fireworks in one of Rotterdam’s main streets, a week before the partial closure decision came into effect.
Rotterdam police said in a statement, “A demonstration that took place tonight at eight in the evening in the Colsignal area led to riots, as fires were set in several places and fireworks were fired, forcing the police to fire several warning shots.”
The statement added: “There are injuries associated with these shots.” Rotterdam’s busy main railway station was closed, as a result of the disturbances.
And last week, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced the re-imposition of a series of health restrictions, especially the restaurant sector, to confront the record rise in Corona injuries.
