PRICES: COLDIRETTI, WITH RECORD INFLATION STANGED AT THE TABLE OF 8.1 BILLION
From + 68.6% ofseed oil which is becoming unobtainable at + 12.5% of seafoodi increases in energy and production costs fueled by the war in Ukraine they infect the prices in the shopping cart with increases that hit businesses and consumers’ tables hard. This is what emerges from the study of Coldiretti which has drawn up a black list of the increases on the shelf based on the surveys Istat oninflation in June 2022, which reached a record since 1986 with food goods up 8.8% compared to the same month of the previous year.
On top of the ranking of price increases there are the seed oilsespecially that of sunflower – points out Coldiretti – which is affected by the conflict in Ukraine which is one of the main producers and had to stop shipments due to the war, while in second place there is the butter with a + 27.7% and in third place flourwith prices rising by 20.5% driven by increases in grain which also affect the pasta, an increase of 18.3%. Fifth place for the margarine (+ 16.8%) and sixth for the chicken meat (+ 15.1%), while on the seventh there is the ricewith ten thousand hectares less sown this year for the Drought which is also cutting crops. Double-digit increases – continues Coldiretti – also for eggs (+ 13.6%), followed by chips (+ 13.5%) and ice cream which cost 13.4% more than last year.
The new jump in prices exacerbates a situation that, according to one estimate Coldirettiwill cost Italian families over 8.1 billion euros in 2022 for food spending alone, due to the effect of inflation triggered by the war in Ukraine, which mainly affects the weakest categories.
PRICES AND INFLATION, THE AGRI-FOOD CHAIN HARD HIT
Six prices for families they run thecost increase hits hardentire agri-food chain starting from the countryside where – continues Coldiretti – more than 1 farm out of 10 (11%) is in such a critical situation as to lead to the cessation of the activity but well about 1/3 of the national total (30%) is still forced at this moment to work in a condition of negative income due to the increase in production costs, according to Crea. In fact, in agriculture there are increases in costs ranging from + 170% of fertilizers to + 90% of feed at + 129% for the diesel fuel.
“We need to work immediately for supply chain agreements between agricultural and industrial enterprises with precise qualitative and quantitative objectives and fair prices that never fall below production costs as required by the new law to combat unfair practices and speculation “states the president of Coldiretti Ettore Prandini underlining that “immediate action must be taken to contain expensive energy and production costs with immediate interventions to save companies and stables and structural measures to plan for the future”
