Indonesia | At least 127 dead in Indonesia in riots that broke out at a football match

Supporters of the losing side had invaded the pitch and the authorities fired tear gas at them, leading to trampling and suffocation in the crowd.

At least 127 people have been killed and 180 injured in the Indonesian East Java province of Malang during the unrest that started late Saturday at a football match, Indonesian authorities say. The news agencies Reuters and AFP reported on the matter.

Supporters of the losing side had invaded the field and were fired upon by authorities with tear gas, leading to trampling and suffocation in the crowd, provincial police chief Nico Afinta told reporters.

“127 people died in the incident, two of whom are police officers. 34 people died inside the stadium and the rest in the hospital,” Afinta said, according to AFP.

In the pictures spread on social media, the crowd seems to rush onto the field. A moment later, police officers with shields and batons ran onto the field towards the crowd. The authenticity of the pictures has not been verified so far.

More on that soon.
