In Germany, due to the increased number of births, more children went to school this year than in 14 years.
Wiesbaden – Nationwide, 771,700 girls and boys began their school career, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Thursday in Wiesbaden. This was therefore 21,900 or 2.9 percent more than a year ago. Most recently, with 727,700 first graders, more children had started school in the 2007/2008 school year.
The sharp increase is due, among other things, to higher birth rates in the birth years of the current first graders. According to statistics, in 2014 33,000 children or 4.8 percent more were born than in 2013. In 2015, the number of births rose again by 23,000 or 2.3 percent compared to the previous year.
Accordingly, according to the Federal Statistical Office, at the end of 2020 there were around three percent more children of the age of five to under seven years of age relevant to schooling than in the previous year. The number of foreign children in this age group was accordingly 9.7 percent higher than in the previous year at the end of 2020, the number of children with German citizenship was 1.9 percent higher.
With 93.6 percent of the children, the majority started their school career at a primary school. Three percent of the first graders go to a special school, 2.4 percent to an integrated comprehensive school and one percent to a free Waldorf school. Compared to the previous school year, there were 3.4 percent more enrollments at Waldorf schools and 3.1 percent more enrollments at primary schools. There were 0.9 percent fewer enrollments at special schools.
