This Saturday (20) is celebrated the Black Consciousness Day, but there is little reason to celebrate. The assessment is by Jandaraci Araújo, co-founder of Conselheira 101 – a program to encourage the presence of black women on boards of directors. “Today we are talking more about the subject and focusing more on these issues, but in practice we see little reflection on this discourse and not as they should”, he assesses.
Black workers are concentrated in the lowest positions in companies and few reach a prominent place on boards of directors. And worse than having few representatives, a study shows that the participation of black executives on the board of directors of companies fell from 6.6% in the Corporate Racial Equity Index (IERE) last year to 4.1% in the IERE-2021.

If the situation as a whole is difficult, black women still feel a more delicate situation. It was with an eye on this scenario that, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, last year, Jandaraci created the program to promote the insertion of black women on boards of directors.
Jandaraci, who was Undersecretary of Entrepreneurship, Small and Medium Enterprises of the State of São Paulo and former Executive Director of Banco do Povo, says that the objective is to train and guide women to occupy these positions.
The first group, with 20 women, graduated last year and around 40% of them already hold positions on the board of directors. “Now, at the end of this year, we are going to form another group and we have the forecast to start another one at the beginning of next year”, he reveals.
She also highlights that a black woman earns 60% less than a white man in the same position. “This impacts on the perspective of socio-economic inclusion, but also on qualification.”
It is essential for her to have opportunities. “It was selling snacks that I got my first opportunity. A teacher, who always shopped with me, one day asked about my story and we talked. The next day he gave me his card and asked me to see one of his managers. Five days later, I started working at one of the biggest retail chains. Years later I learned that the vacancy did not exist. I made my career there. I was transferred to São Paulo in 2003. I worked for a long time at this company and followed my career in retail”, she says.
Today, she is an emeritus advisor for Conscious Capitalism Brazil, speaker, postgraduate corporate finance professor and consultant.
