Incidents of violence against NS employees have increased by eight percent in 2023 compared to the previous year. That reports The Telegraph Thursday morning, based on conversations with the Dutch Railways (NS). Last year, the most serious violent incidents increased from 965 in 2022 to 1,042. In total, the NS had to call the police more than 13,000 times in 2023.
According to the NS, there has been a clear trend of aggression and intolerance on trains and at stations since the corona crisis. In 2020 there were 661 violent incidents, and that number will almost double in 2023. A year ago, the NS asked the Ministry of Justice and Security for access to the driver's license register to make it easier to determine the identity of those involved.
A spokesperson for the NS explains The Telegraph that this year's 1,042 incidents are only a fraction of the incidents that conductors have to deal with. According to him, only criminal offenses are registered, which range from serious forms of verbal aggression, such as threatening, to physical violence. According to the spokesperson, the consequences for victims among NS employees could be very serious.
