Four fires west of Dallas burned 54,000 acres, and the deputy police chief who was helping people escape was killed.
The Texas Fire Service said on Saturday that the four fires have been raging since Wednesday or Thursday in Eastland County, about 190 km west of Dallas, and are about 30 percent contained.
The newspaper reported that about 85 percent of the town of Carbon, which has a population of 225 people, was burned, and published pictures of houses that had been reduced to rubble and rubble.
On Friday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s office said he had designated 11 Texas counties as disaster areas, and ordered flags at half-staff in Eastland County in honor of Deputy Police Chief Barbara Finley.
Eastland Police Chief Jason Feger said Finlay drove on Thursday to check on an elderly person as part of her official duties.
“With conditions deteriorating dramatically and visibility poor due to smoke, Finley’s car veered off the road and was engulfed in flames,” Weger added.
