The last trip
A British burial car manufacturer unveils a hearse based on Ford’s electric supercar
The last trip. Specifically, the one that transfers the deceased to the cemetery or crematorium and that practically all mortals have to do. Funeral companies give everything to magnify the figure of the deceased. They use hearses derived from ‘premiun’ sedans, cars that most of the time the passenger never tried while alive.
The latest model to join these fleets is a Ford Mustang. Yes, the sports car of a lifetime, but in its electric version. And it is that Coleman Milne, the main manufacturer of the United Kingdom of hearses, presents a new range of fully electric vehicles made on the platform of the Mustang Mach-E.
It’s not like they’re going to run the Indianapolis 500 in these cars; that is why he has given them the name of Etive, a river that runs through an idyllic spot in the Highlands of Scotland. With right-hand drive -there will be adaptation for the rest of Europe-, Mustang-E Etive in its van version and dueling car are in the approval and test phase. For this, it is understood that without a coffin, they will be subjected to a journey of 64,000 kilometers to see their pros and cons.
“The Mach-E is the perfect base for a hearse and limousine. It’s comfortable, quiet and respectful, while giving funeral directors all the benefits and innovations found in today’s electric vehicles,” explains Coleman Milne Sales Director Graham Clow, who gives the thanks to Ford for allowing them to convert the electric Mustang.
With all the extras
The hearse turns the legendary electric supercar into something completely different, recognizable only by its front end. It has three seats for living passengers and space for the coffin with its consequent anchorages. Above, the ceiling is made entirely of glass to illuminate its interior, where there is also a good space for luggage, in this case the crowns and tributes to the deceased.
Funeral homes can contract for the hearse, among other extras, a tailgate that opens and closes electrically, a sliding platform for the full-size coffin -eliminates one of the seats-, ambient lighting -like any other ‘premium’ car- or a few additional rails on the roof to carry the wreaths. For its part, the dueling limousine has seven seats, tinted windows and the possibility of the central door having a folding glass.
Already in technical terms, the hearse and the Mustang-E Etive limousine mount a 75kWh battery, which are capable of offering an estimated range of up to 200 miles or 320 kilometers (439 kilometers in a standard Mach-E). Capable of recharging up to 80% of the battery in 38 minutes with ‘quick’ plugs of up to 115kW. Both hearses feature the same driving aids and accessories as the stock vehicles.
