Every year in Italy over 26 thousand people undergo bariatric surgery which, according to experts, is confirmed as the most powerful and lasting weapon in the fight against obesity. Compared to the 26,624 total interventions last year, 14,424 were concentrated in Northern Italy (54%), 5,407 in the South (20%), 4,613 in the Center (18%) and 2,180 in the Islands (8%). In detail, the region with the greatest number of interventions is Lombardy (8,189), followed by Campania (3,679) and Emilia Romagna (3,428). Scrolling through the ranking, we find Lazio (1,975), Sicily (1,700), Puglia (1,498), Abruzzo (1,294), Veneto (1,202) and Tuscany (1,004). In the second part of the list Piedmont (672), Sardinia (480), Liguria (398), Friuli Venezia Giulia (386), Marche (199) and Umbria (129). Bringing up the rear are Trentino Alto Adige and Basilicata (both with 121), Calabria (109), Valle d’Aosta (28) and Molise (12).
According to Sicob data relating to 2023 – which will be illustrated at the 32nd National Congress of the Italian Obesity Surgery Society ‘Obesity: in search of a new therapeutic alliance’, scheduled from 23 to 25 May at Giardini Naxos (Messina) – and collected from the 135 official centers (66 in the North, 28 in the Centre, 28 in the South and 13 in the Islands), it emerges that 73% of the patients are women and 27% men, while, in terms of age, 30% are between 41 and 50 years old, 26% are between 51 and 60, 22% are between 31 and 40, 13% are between 21 and 30, 7% are over 61 and 2% are between 17 and 20 years. As regards the type of operation, in over 97% of cases conducted laparoscopically or robotically, Sleeve Gastrectomy (14,149) represents 53% of the procedures carried out; followed by traditional gastric bypass (3,767, 14%), minigastric bypass (3,538, 13%) and endoscopic procedures (2,605, 10%).
Among the topics at the center of the Sicob Congress are laparoscopic and robotic surgery, the prevention and management of postoperative complications, but also microbiota, nutrition and drugs.
