Pyongyang fired two ballistic missiles early on Sunday, authorities in North Korean countries said, the seventh such launch by North Korea within days, raising widespread concern in Washington and its allies Tokyo and Seoul.
Officials in the South Korean capital said that the escalation of missile launches by North Korea may indicate that it is closer than ever to resuming nuclear tests for the first time since 2017, as preparations have been observed at the test site for months.
Japan’s Minister of State for Defense Toshiro Ino told reporters that the two missiles reached an altitude of 100 km and traveled 350 km.
The first missile was launched at about 1:47 am local time (1647 GMT) and the second was about six minutes later.
He stated that the two missiles fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, noting that authorities are still working to determine the type of the two missiles, including the possibility that they were submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
The US military said it was consulting closely with allies and partners following the launch, which it said highlighted the “destabilizing impact” of North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
