The indigenous Mapuche people inhabited vast territories of Chile and Argentina long before the Spanish colonization. In Chile, with the creation of the country in the 19th century, many of these lands were forcibly occupied by the State. Later, over the decades, they have ended up in the hands of large industries, but the Mapuche have never stopped claiming a territory that they consider ancestral.
Now, the current president, the progressive Gabriel Boric, resorted to the militarization of the Mapuche majority territories, after an upsurge in violence by different Mapuche groups and criminal gangs. Violence has been one of the forms of protest that some activists have found after decades of asking the government for land restitution.
A large part of society demands that the Government guarantee security in the country. Boric is facing a conflict that no Chilean government has managed to resolve. In 5 Minutes we explain the origin of these confrontations and what the challenges are for the president, who, despite having militarized the Biobío and Araucanía regions, seeks a political dialogue.
