This weekend Formula 1 is back on track for the fourth round of the 2022 season, the first European, at the circuit of Imola. In addition to the updates that will bring the teams or not and the curiosity to understand if Ferrari will remain as dominant as it was in the first three races of the season, another interesting topic for reflection is added. In fact, the weekend of the Emilia Romagna GP will also mark the season debut of the Sprint Race. The short race of 100 km, introduced in the F1 program last year, will take place again on Saturday, with early qualifying on Friday and the ‘traditional’ race confirmed on Sunday.
Compared to 2021, however, there are a couple of relevant news. The first is purely statistical and concerns the pole position: last season, in fact, the pole was formally assigned to the winner of the short race, while those who set the best time on Friday in qualifying had to ‘settle’ for the first position in the Sprint Race. This year, however, the best driver in qualifying will actually get pole position. However, this will allow him to start in front of everyone once again only in the 100 km race on Saturday. The starting grid of the ‘real’ GP on Sunday will instead be established by the order of arrival of the short race. Therefore, the situation could arise of a driver who starts in front of everyone on Sunday despite not having formally obtained the pole position.
The second big news, on the other hand, is all of a practical nature. THE points awarded in fact, for the Sprint Race placings, they will increase significantly. From the 3-2-1 format, which rewarded only the first three at the finish line, we will in fact move on to system 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. There will therefore always be only one point of distance between one position and another, but eight riders will move their world rankings. An important opportunity, for example, for Charles Leclerc’s pursuers to try to shorten their gap in the ranking. Overall, the maximum result achievable by a single driver during the Imola weekend will be 34 points.
