The world-famous Oktoberfest beer festival returned from the corona break. The pictures and video show the mood of the opening day in Munich.
Oktoberfest has been organized in Munich in southern Germany for two hundred years, and it has only had to be canceled 26 times during its history. World wars and cholera have hindered the organization. This time, the coronavirus pandemic caused a two-year hiatus.
At the 2019 Oktoberfest, more than six million visitors managed to drink a total of 7.3 million liters of German beer. Germans are the top nations in Europe in terms of beer consumption.
Mayor of Munich Dieter Reiter had the honor of opening the first beer keg on Saturday, reports the news agencies Reuters and AFP. From the barrel, Reiter offered a pint to the Bavarian Prime Minister to Markus Söder.
Despite the festive mood, the German brewing industry has expressed its concerns to the government due to the sudden increase in the price of energy and the decrease in the availability of raw materials.
The festival is scheduled to last until the first weekend of October.
