“The ICJ demands that Israel take measures to avoid famine in Gaza
This Thursday the judges of the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take whatever measures are necessary to allow effective access for basic food supplies to enter Gaza without delay.
The famine is beginning
The ICJ urged that land crossing points be increased and kept open “for as long as necessary,” while noting that Israel must “ensure with immediate effect” that it will not commit acts that violate the rights of Gazans, considered a group protected by the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
“The court observes that Palestinians in Gaza no longer face only the risk of famine (…) but that famine is beginning,” explained the ICJ judges.
The UN highlighted the need to increase the flow of humanitarian aid to combat the food insecurity of hundreds of thousands of Gazans. “There is no alternative but to deliver large-scale aid by land in order to achieve enough aid to save lives, especially in the north,” the Office of Humanitarian Affairs posted on its X account.
