Washington Capitals Russian forward Yevgeny Kuznetsov has applied for the players' support and treatment program.

The NHL and the NHL players' association announced the matter late on Monday evening.

Neither the NHL nor the Capitals commented on Kuznetsov's situation in more detail. Kuznetsov is on the sidelines for the time being.

The treatment program is intended to help players with mental health, substance abuse or other personal problems.

The support program is the same as the Finnish star of the Columbus Blue Jackets Patrick Laine applied about a week ago.

Kuznetsov is one of the core players of the Capitals. The experienced 31-year-old Russian center has played 43 matches this season with a modest output of 6+11.

Kuznetsov was accused of using cocaine in the spring of 2019, when he gave a positive doping sample in connection with the World Cup.
