To become the leader in advanced air mobility through aircraft with 100% electric propulsion or with hydrogen fuel cell technology. This is the heart of the memorandum of understanding signed by Rolls-Royce and Hyundai Motor Group who together are candidates to become leaders of the AAM. The agreement between the two companies will make it possible to share the experience of the British brand in the aviation field with that of the Korean company in the development of fuel cell systems, trying to provide solutions to the markets of urban air mobility (UAM) and regional air mobility (RAM) and developing sustainable aviation.
The memorandum signed by Hyundai and Rolls-Royce contains five strategic objectives, starting from collaboration for technological development and the requirements of power and propulsion systems for Hyundai’s Advanced Air Mobility division. The two companies will then work on the industrialization of Rolls-Royce power and propulsion systems for the advanced air mobility market and on the development of electric power systems based on hydrogen fuel cells as a power source for Hyundai’s RAM platforms. Together they will work hard to bring to market a fuel cell electric powertrain system for the broader AAM market with the aim of achieving a joint simulation of a fuel cell electric aircraft by 2025.
The agreement falls within the respective corporate sustainability and research plans in the field of air mobility: on the one hand, Rolls-Royce which is committed to ensuring that its new products are compatible with net zero carbon emissions by 2030 and that all its products are compatible with net zero carbon emissions by 2050. On the other hand, Hyundai has announced its AAM corporate roadmap, which includes the UAM and RAM segments to offer eco-friendly air mobility solutions for people within and between cities. Hyundai Motor Group’s US-based Supernal unit aims to begin commercial services of UAM operations in the United States in 2028, while Hyundai Motor Group plans to launch RAM services in the 2030s.
