Hurricane Rick, category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, made Mexican landfall in the state of Guerrero in the early morning of Monday, October 25. Winds and rains have felled trees and damaged a road. Meanwhile, the authorities have urged citizens to take precautions.
At dawn on Monday, October 25, Hurricane Rick made landfall in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero. The irruption was announced by the National Water Commission (Conagua).
“The center of Hurricane Rick, category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, made landfall in the vicinity of the municipality of La Unión de Isidoro Montes de Oca, Guerrero, at 05:00 local time (10.00 GMT),” the statement read.
However, at 7:00 in the morning the cyclone was already located 25 kilometers northeast of Lázaro Cárdenas (Michoacán) and 75 kilometers northwest of Zihuatanejo (Guerrero). It advanced at a speed of 13 kilometers per hour registering sustained winds of 165 km / h with gusts of 205 km / h.
Later, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported that the phenomenon had been downgraded to category 1 and that it was located between the municipalities of Arteaga and Tumbiscatío, Michoacán.
The SMN explained that “its cloud bands cause very strong rains at extraordinary points, strong winds and high waves in western and southern states of the country.” Indeed, several trees have been felled while a road has been affected.
For its part, the US National Hurricane Center warned that “Rick could cause landslides in the mountainous terrain of the coast.”
And although the forecast of the SMN indicates that Rick will weaken even more in the next few hours, the authorities urged the general population to take their precautions and heed the recommendations issued by the authorities of the National Civil Protection System.
This service decreed the state of alert for 11 states of Mexico and 712 municipalities. Meanwhile, the Lázaro Cárdenas authorities stated that they had opened six emergency shelters.
Several cyclones have formed this year in the Pacific. Among them, Andrés, Blanca, Carlos, Dolores, Enrique, Felicia, Guillermo, Hilda, Ignacio, Jimena, Kevin, Linda, Marty, Nora, Olaf, Pamela and Rick.
Dolores left three dead from electrical storms. Grace left a total of 11 dead. Nora caused the death of a minor and seven missing. And the passage of Pamela harmed more than 2,000 families while some 9,000 people were affected. They also suffered material damage, especially to the electricity grid.
