Alonso-Russell: the two 'factions'
The accident of George Russell on the penultimate lap of Australian GPresulting from an early braking of Fernando Alonso at the entrance to turn 6, it generated multiple points of view from former drivers (and not only) on the Spaniard's maneuver, which was then sanctioned with a 20 second penalty. Some of them defended the two-time world champion, while others took Russell's side, considering the Aston Martin driver's action dangerous.
Hülkenberg's accusation
Among these, also the #27 of Haas Nico Hülkenberg. In a meeting with the media in Suzuka, the German provided his opinion on the issue, totally rejecting Alonso's maneuver: “My personal opinion, when I've seen everything, is that I wasn't very impressed with Fernando's tactics at that point, to be honest – He admitted – Melbourne, after all, is a kind of street circuit and it's quite narrow. We approach that curve at 260-270 km/h, and the exit is blind. If because of the flags, or for other reasons, someone was late and bumped into George, the manner and outcome of the accident would have been different. Although this tactic is quite common in F1, in that corner, at that speed and with a blind exit, I believe it was the wrong corner to do it, and it created a rather dangerous situation“.
The problem of barriers
Going into more detail, Hülkenberg added other elements that underline the risks incurred at that point, also citing a past episode: “The gear shift and deceleration were too great, and it's easy to overreact and lose the rear of the car – he continued – furthermore, as we saw last year with Albon who impacted precisely that curve, the barrier puts the car back on the track. We need to evaluate this and change something for the future. It's not nice when you get to a corner and find a car in the middle of the circuit.”
Alonso's version
Returning to Alonso's maneuver, Hülkenberg then mentioned some of the Spaniard's statements relating to a technical problem after the accident: “What I don't understand is that immediately afterwards, on the radio, He mentioned accelerator problemswhether it had crashed or not – he concluded – then, later, he doesn't talk about it anymore. It only talks about 'standard procedure and tactics'. So he's not online and seems to have changed his mind, but I wasn't very impressed“.
