However, now the hot terrace summer is already approaching and people are going to restaurants after the closures caused by the pandemic, so what things can be taken into account right away to prevent the gray economy?

Deputy director in charge of tax administration control Tarja Valsi gives three tips on how to act correctly in a restaurant.

Use the card when you eat.

1) Do not use cash.

“Avoid cash, always use a card,” says Valsi.

He urges to prefer card payment, because it always leaves a trace in the systems. Therefore, paying by card also makes it easier to find out possible tax evasion.

Always check the contents of the receipt.

2) Check that the receipt has certain things.

“Ask the seller for a receipt and payment receipt.”

The customer should request a receipt for the payment, which shows a breakdown of the purchased products. If the card payment terminal’s receipt does not show a breakdown, you must request another receipt that is printed from the cash register.

“When you also ask for a receipt printed from the cash register, it is ensured that the purchases are registered as part of the company’s sales and that the money is not just transferred to the account.”

An exceptionally low price can be an alarm signal.

3) Watch the prices.

“If the restaurant’s prices are really low compared to competitors, the restaurant often fails to pay taxes.”

According to Vals, the real income of employees in many restaurants consists of an official salary of a few hundred euros, a salary paid illegally, and unemployment benefits. According to him, it is not only tax evasion, but also abuse of social benefits.

“Restaurant, transport, cleaning and construction industries are low-wage industries where the most taxes are avoided in Finland.”

If you suspect that a company is evading taxes, you can report it to the Tax Administration anonymously with the tip information form.
