In 2017, the most used messaging app in the world, WhatsApp, introduced the function to delete received or sent messages. To delete it, simply press and hold on the message balloon, thus activating a menu that allows you to delete the text, for yourself or also for the recipient. Sometimes, however, messages are deleted by mistake, or we search for something within the multitude of chats in our WhatsApp without realizing that perhaps we have deleted it by mistake. The good news is that there are various methods to read deleted conversations, regardless of the platform you use: Android or iOS.
Recover deleted WhatsApp messages on Android
With Android from version 11 onwards it is possible to recover deleted messages in just a few steps. To do so, you need to go to the 'Settings' of your device, scroll and select 'Notifications', choose 'Notification History', then tap on the switch to toggle and enable the option. Once the notification history has been activated, from that moment on it will be possible to see WhatsApp message alerts even if they have been deleted.
One method to recover deleted WhatsApp messages is to regularly back up your data and restore from a previous backup. To do this, you will have to completely uninstall the app from the device and re-enter the registration process, then go to WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat backup and look for a previous backup that contains the deleted messages. However, this method can be laborious as it requires uninstalling the app and re-authenticating to back up.
To read deleted messages from WhatsApp on Android you can also use third-party apps, but it is always important to proceed with caution when using these tools, as they carry risks such as data theft, malware and unauthorized access to the device. Furthermore, not all recovery tools are effective and some might even cause permanent data loss. It is important to do thorough research and evaluate the risks before using any third-party app to recover deleted WhatsApp messages.
One of the safe apps for this purpose is called Get Deleted Messages, available on the Play Store in both a free and paid version (3.99 euros). Once you have registered and granted permissions to the app, it will show us a simple list of WhatsApp messages that we have deleted. Another app that works without privacy risks is Notisave, which can be downloaded for free.
Recover deleted WhatsApp messages on iPhone
On Apple smartphones, iCloud is the only method to view deleted WhatsApp messages. As long as the message was saved in Apple's cloud service, it can be restored and viewed even after deletion. Backup to iCloud is activated by going to your phone's settings. You will need to click on your name at the top, then on 'iCloud', and under 'Apps that use iCloud' you will need to click on 'Show all' and finally activate the switch next to WhatsApp.
To read deleted messages, however, you will need to uninstall WhatsApp from your iPhone and reinstall it from the App Store. By reopening WhatsApp and starting the registration process you will be able to restore the old backup from iCloud. Once the backup is fully restored, you will be able to view the deleted messages in your chats.
