UEFA Euro 2024 is about to begin. The tournament will take place in Germany between June 14 and July 14. There are a total of 10 chosen venues that will host the different matches of the competition, where 24 teams divided into 6 groups will seek to lift the trophy at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
Spain is part of Group B where it is seeded along with Italy, Albania and Croatia, against which it will debut on Saturday, June 15 in Berlin. While waiting for the start of this new Euro Cup that is about to fall, in 90min we are going to review how many European titles the Spanish National Team has won throughout its history.
The Spanish team became champions three times, like Germany, and both lead the ranking with the highest number of titles won.
The first Euro Cup that Spain won was in 1964 as a home team. In that edition the format was very different from the current one, with double-leg eliminators that each team played as home and away, while the final phase was already played in a single venue and four teams arrived.
On that occasion, La Roja reached the semifinals where they defeated the Hungarian team 2-1 in extra time, qualifying for the final, where they beat the Soviet Union 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid.
In this way, Spain became the second team to win the European Championship, after the USSR did so four years earlier.
They won the next two consecutively and having also won a world championship in between. It should be noted that in 1984 she was runner-up.
After 44 years of having won its first Euro Cup, Spain had a streak where it was at its peak. In 2008 with a team of great names like Casillas, Capdevila, Puyol, Marchena, Ramos, Senna, Silva, Xavi, Iniesta, Cesc and Torres He won his second European Championship, which was played in two countries, Austria and Switzerland.
In that European Championship, Spain defeated Italy in the quarterfinals in a penalty shootout, thus breaking one of the curses that haunted the Spanish team. In the semifinals they defeated Russia, a rival they had already faced in the group stage, in a sensational match by Luis Araginés’s team who played a brilliant game.
On June 29, the grand final was held where La Roja faced Germany, another of its betes noires. At 33 minutes Fernando Torres scored the only goal of the game that would give Spain the second European Championship in its history.
In 2010, that same generation of soccer players became world champions and in 2012 they were crowned again in what would be their third title in their record with the Euro Cup, also becoming three-time champion of the European continent.
Spain came to that Euro Cup as one of the favorites to lift the title and they did so. In that last title, the team led by Vicente del Bosque overcame Italy in the kyiv final, 4-0 with goals from David Silva, Jordi Alba, Fernando Torres and Juan Mata, in a memorable match.
