The Russian state-owned company has been a well-known player in the energy world since the 90s, from 2012 Gazprom also worked hard on its name recognition among the general public. At that time, the company became the title sponsor of the UEFA Champions League. Millions of Dutch viewers have seen the name prominently featured in every round since then, Gazprom pays tens of millions of euros per year for this.
2012 is also the year that Gazprom opened an office in Den Bosch in the Netherlands and started selling gas contracts to Dutch companies and governments. Ten years later, that seems quite successful. At least 120 Dutch municipalities purchase gas from Gazprom, Follow The Money (FTM) found out last year.
