Last year, returnal took the world of gaming by surprise since the new Housemarque turned out to be one of the best exclusives the Playstation 5 has received to date. Although there were a couple of clues indicating that this game would receive some kind of post-launch content, the truth is that its developers have already moved to a new IP.
Ilari Kuittinen, managing director at Housemarque, said that this new IP was just “in the pre-production stage”, but one of his goals with it is precisely to preserve the essence of the company. In his own words:
“Just the last dinosaurs making arcade games. Nex Machina, a few years ago, was actually a shoot-’em-up in this ’80s style. You could say that’s kind of a hint. But it is interesting. We’ve been thinking about that. We had our time of working on multiplayer games. We tried but it didn’t work out so well. But we’re just getting started with this new game, this new IP, we’re still conceptualizing. We’ll see what comes out of this.
We are really trying to hold on to our identity as a company. It’s amazing how much gaming has grown and evolved, and there’s so much variety and diversity with all of these gaming experiences. All of them can coexist peacefully. There can be games as a service, multiplayer games, games with many different sensibilities. Returnal is just another voice. At this point we are proud of what we have done with Returnal, and we are excited to continue this same trajectory as a company.”
Other than those statements, Housemarque He did not offer additional details that could give us any kind of clue about the project in question, but if it is just in its pre-production stage, then you better arm yourself with patience because we will not have many news in the short term.
Publisher’s note: On the one hand, it does hurt me that Returnal hasn’t received any new content, but on the other hand, I’m also very excited to know that Housemarque is already preparing to delight us with another IP. I mean, the bad thing is that there is still a good while to know exactly what it is about.
