The Murcian Health Service (SMS) increased its activity in the afternoon during the first half of this year, as reported by this department in a statement. In total, 132,000 patients were treated in the afternoon in surgery, outpatient consultations or diagnostic tests, according to data provided by Health.
Thus, from January to June, 56,085 patients were treated in specialist outpatient clinics, which is 10,788 more than in the same semester of the previous year. This represents an increase of 24%. The specialties with the greatest increase in activity are Traumatology, Dermatology and Rehabilitation.
As for the operating rooms, they recorded 11,383 interventions in the afternoons during the first six months of the year, 3,572 more than in the same period of 2022, which puts the increase in activity at 31.3%. Specialties stand out such as General Surgery, with more than 1,100 interventions, Traumatology (820), Ophthalmology (812) and Urology (414).
Finally, from January to June, 64,645 diagnostic tests were performed, which represents an increase of more than 5,000 compared to the same period of the previous year (8.8% more). Thus, 2,744 more CT scans have been performed, and the number of MRIs and ultrasounds has also increased (1,280 more compared to last year).
Delays, unpublished
The managing director of the SMS, Isabel Ayala, pointed out that the activity to respond to the influx of patients “and thus reduce the waiting list for both surgery and tests and outpatient consultations” has increased “very significantly.” Ayala assured that “the measures implemented by the regional government to reduce delay times are having an effect.” However, the SMS still does not publish the waiting list data for the first semester. The Region of Murcia, Andalusia and Galicia are the only three communities that have not yet made this information public. Health insists on waiting for the Ministry’s report, although it promised to report the waiting lists every quarter.
