What better way to spend a Halloween night than enjoying truly terrifying movies hidden in the catalog of your streaming platform? streaming? It’s clear that you don’t have time to walk around a thousand places and apps digital that offer the same cinematographic content; For this reason, we have selected a handful of spooky options that have gained ‘cult’ status in recent years thanks to their directors, most of whom are promising in the horror industry. These are our recommendations:
Don’t Breathe
Produced by Sam Raimi and directed by Fede Alvarez, Don’t Breathe is an inventive genre film that makes your skin crawl. It follows a trio of Detroit thieves waiting for an opportunity: rob an elderly blind man who has a bag of money stashed in his house. Too bad the victim has the skills and physique of Stephen Lang and is determined to kill anyone who sets foot in his house. And not only that, the guy keeps a nasty secret in the basement. The minimal number of characters involved facilitates characterization in a film that implements a curious inversion. Don’t Breathe follows the horror subgenre linked to home invasions, but the levels of unease and anxiety it provokes, thanks to impressive cinematography and direction, make the tension almost unbearable.
X – A Sexy Horror Story
With a fantastic Mia Goth in the dual role of Maxine and Pearl, X- A Sexy Horror Story follows a couple of uptight, elderly Texas farmers who don’t appreciate the fact that a group of young people they rent a barn to is an adult film crew. The film, set in the late 70s, is a chronicle of blood where the actors and the producer will be victims of the madness of the elderly couple led by Pearl, envious of the youth and beauty of the young women. x It has everything and is a resounding nod to the first classics of cinema slasher as Psychosis, Don’t Open the Door, Deep Red and many others.
Train to Busan
Train to Busan is a of zombie movies that gave a new twist to the genre. Its cast includes Gong Yoo (the “slapper” of The Squid Game) and Ma Deong-sok (Eternals) in the role of an office worker and a gangster who face a horde of undead. In Seoul, Seok-Woo (Yoo) boards a train with his daughter, unaware that a nearby chemical spill has turned many into zombies. While in the crowded lower-class carriages, travelers are overwhelmed by the outbreak, in the first-class cabins they fight to keep the undead at bay and escape. All this in the narrow and claustrophobic environment of the train cars to Busan, the film by the brilliant author of Hellbound Yeon Sang-ho, is full of daring shots that make the action fill with adrenaline, pointing the camera at voracious specimens that move as fast as rats. The design of the creatures is also as real as it is terrifying.
Empty Man (The Last Day Messenger)
This is the directorial debut of David Prior: Empty Man (The Last Day Messenger) is a supernatural horror film fused with a thriller psychological. There is a twenty-minute short featuring the Empty Man of the title and a feature-length film with all the context. The prologue, set in 1995, follows four friends on a hike through Bhutan, South Asia. When one of them falls into a crevasse, they find something terrifying deep in the mountain. There is a jump to 2018, in Missouri, where former detective James helps his neighbor Nora look for her daughter, who left a message written in blood in the bathroom: “Empty Man made me do it.” Prior rejects the jumpscares easy to encourage the construction of a type of fear with disturbing tones; instead, it takes a woven horror concept and turns it into something new and sinister.
Houses October Built
Houses October Built It is the directorial debut of Bobby Roe, in the cast we also find producer Zack Andrews. The film centers on five friends who embark on a road trip and find themselves in the crosshairs of disturbed individuals. Days before Halloween, the group intends to visit some of the most terrifying haunted houses in the United States. Some of these attractions have shows starring shady, perverse and dangerous criminals, only no one realizes that because being actors, their appearance and attitude do not arouse suspicion.
The incredible thing about filming is that Houses October Built It took place in real haunted houses, and this is clear in the special effects. By integrating fake news, surveillance footage, advertisements, photos and other media with the supposedly found footage, the film creates an aura of terrifying credibility.
