Yesterday’s discussions on Mercedes regularity had brought the Formula 1 watch back three months, to that poisonous season finale between Red Bull and the Brackley team. The ‘new’ or – in the words of Toto Wolff – updated Mercedes presented extremely tapered bellies and a novelty in the area of the mirrors, with the supports that went to work as flow deviators, and therefore assumed an aerodynamic role. Red Bull wanted us to see clearly and team principal Chris Horner didn’t hide his annoyance: “We want the spirit of the regulation not to be violated“.
The British, however, denied ever giving an interview to Auto Motor und Sportin which the German newspaper had reported statements by Horner on the obvious irregularity of the W13. Denial reaffirmed also in the press conference during the test break: “Mercedes is absolutely legal, it seems that it has all the credentials. Words never spoken have been mentioned. Their car is obviously innovative, and as far as we are concerned it complies with the regulations. Mercedes is an extreme and totally opposite concept compared to the others, I have no idea where it can take them, but this is Formula 1 and it seems absolutely regular to me, I repeat. These concepts show the creativity that exists even within very stringent regulations, such as this year’s Formula 1. Whether it’s the right way or whatever, only time will tell. Over time, there will be a convergence between philosophies, but starting from a blank sheet we now have ten different interpretations and that’s the beauty of this sport.“.
