The Permanent Commission of Contingencies (Copeco) of Honduras decreed this Monday “yellow” alert (surveillance) in three Caribbean departments and a green (prevention) in another four due to the rains that affect part of the country due to a cold front.
The yellow alert, for 48 hours, is in force from 10:00 local time (16:00 GMT) in the departments of Cortés, Atlántida and Islas de la Bahía, in the Honduran Caribbean, indicated the agency of civil protection it’s a statement.
The departments of Copán and Santa Bárbara (west), Yoro (north) and Colón (Caribbean) remain under a green alert “as a precaution due to the convergence of winds from the north and northwest over the Honduran Caribbean,” Copeco said.

According to the Center for Atmospheric, Oceanographic and Seismic Studies (Cenaos) of the Contingency Commission, the entry of this phenomenon will increase “the cloudiness, alter the waves, cause a drop in temperatures and weak to moderate and occasionally heavy precipitation” in the departments from Santa Bárbara, Copán, Atlántida and Cortés.
Experts point out that today accumulations of between 175 and 200 millimeters of rain could be recorded in the north of Cortés and center and west of Atlántidaup to 150 millimeters in western Yoro and between 80 and 120 in the Santa Bárbara mountains.
In the rest of the west, center and east, “cloudy skies will prevail, accompanied by scattered weak rainfall with daily accumulations between 1 to 5 millimeters and maximums of 10 millimeters in mountainous sectors,” he added.
The fresh wind will blow from the north and northeast with average speeds of 20 to 30 kilometers per hour in the departments of the Caribbean coast and gusts of 40 kilometers over the southwestern and southern regions of the Central American country.
The yellow alert in Honduras entails preventive evacuations in regions at risk of landslideslandslides, floods or overflowing of rivers, while green means that the behavior of a phenomenon that could result in disaster should be monitored.
During the period, the drop in temperatures in high regions, such as the west of the country, will range between 13 and 15 degrees, while in the north and the Caribbean it will fall to between 19 and 21 degrees Celsius.
The Honduran Fire Department evacuated several families living in the Omoa sector, Cortés, in recent hours due to the rains, which have also caused the flooding of several rivers in the country.
The Honduran authorities called on families to take precautionary measures, not to approach rivers or banks and not to cross swollen currents.
They also recommended that the population shelter children, the elderly and the sick to prevent health problems, particularly of a respiratory nature.
