Honduras immediately severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan and strengthened ties with China. The Honduran Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this on Sunday. According to the Central American country, there is “only one China” of which Taiwan is an essential part, and the Chinese government is “the only legitimate government representing all of China”.
A few hours after the announcement, the Honduran foreign minister, who is visiting Beijing, and his Chinese counterpart signed an agreement on China’s diplomatic recognition.
Taiwan confirmed the breakup on Sunday. In response, the flag of the Central American country was removed from the Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Taiwanese ambassador to Honduras had already been recalled, out of dissatisfaction with the visit of the Honduran minister to Beijing.
With the severing of ties, Taiwan is becoming increasingly isolated. There are now thirteen countries in the world, including Vatican City, that recognize the democratic island as a sovereign state. China regards Taiwan as a renegade province and refuses to enter into relations with countries that have formal ties with Taiwan. The Netherlands does not recognize Taiwan either, although there is a Dutch trade office in the capital Taipei.
