Hockey Chairman of the Finnish Hockey Association about playing in the youth competitions later: “The key question is how the players feel”

“In my opinion, summer is the only option at the time,” says Harri Nummela, President of the Finnish Hockey Association.

National teams the international hockey calendar will be at an all-time high next year as attempts are made to reconcile the values competitions tackled by the coronary pandemic. The World Championships for men under the age of 20, which was abruptly suspended in Canada on Wednesday, will be played next June – or not.

When the International Hockey Federation IIHF held a press conference in Edmonton to suspend the World Cup, the new president of the federation Luc Tardif kicked off the race for a new time in June. Attempts are also being made to accommodate the World Championships for women under the age of 18, which were canceled at Christmas in Sweden and are scheduled for January.

Finnish member of the IIHF board Heikki Hietanen says the World Cup goal is behind many bends.

“The state of mind in the IIHF is that both the men’s U20 and women’s U18 World Championships would be held. Potential race organizers are being sought and the time of the tournament should be agreed between the parties. It is not worth investing in tournaments very close to spring, as May is congested in terms of value competitions, ”says Hietanen, not to mention the World Championships in Tampere’s new Arena.

It is still worth considering one variable in the equation.

“We need to know exactly about the corona situation,” Hietanen adds.

Hockey Association chairman Harri Nummela hopes that tournaments for men under the age of 20 and women under the age of 18 will end up on the World Cup calendar.

“It would be great if alternative solutions could be found for the World Cup. In my opinion, summer is the only option at the time, but it will not be easy to move there either, ”Nummela formulates.

Especially for the World Championships for men under the age of 20, the traditional time on both sides of the turn of the year has been 44 years self-evident.

“The key question is how players feel about the possibility of a transfer, whether they would be willing to play. They would have to evaluate their other commitments for the coming season and their company, wherever they play, ”Nummela describes.

The men’s World Championships were played this year in Riga, Latvia, exceptionally late, on May 21–6. June.

In Red Deer Swedish players who have played in the World Cup have been sharply critical of the canonical arrangements for the Canadian tournament. The corona bubble gives a superficial picture in their narratives.

Nummela does not comment on whether direct mistakes were made in the World Cup preparations.

“It’s important that the IIHF and the puck family look ahead to take every possible lesson about what didn’t work out in the arrangements,” and that the lessons are put to use in the upcoming spring championships.

The suspension of the World Cup was in itself a justified solution.

“The background was doctors’ recommendation to stop the race. After all, the coronary situation changed really quickly with the new virus variant, ”says Nummela.

He got the Finnish team from GM in Edmonton the night before Thursday From Kimmo Oikarinen message that the Young Lions will fly from Calgary, Canada to Frankfurt, Germany on Friday. There was no information about further connections at that time, but the team will be in Finland by the New Year.

Nummela could not estimate how much the extra flights would cause additional costs for the union.

“We’re talking big sums. Everything is out of player development. That is an unfortunate fact, ”GM Oikarinen of the youth national team told STT on Wednesday when an early return home had just been confirmed due to the suspension of the World Cup.
