The President of the Government and the leader of the opposition star in a first face-to-face meeting full of reproaches for the economic crisis, the energy measures or the lack of political agreements
President Pedro Sánchez and the president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijoo, held their first face-to-face debate today, with the Senate as the stage and with the notepad full of reproaches to the adversary. The alibi has been the presentation in the Upper House of the measures to mitigate the energy crisis and discuss the economic context, but the debate has soon been diverted, in a singular way in the replicas, towards an exchange of clearly pre-election reproaches. The darts, which we reproduce below, have sometimes been poisoned.
This is the first duel between the two after Feijoo was elected president of the conservative formation in April this year, after the party crisis that led Pablo Casado to resign. The face-to-face meeting was held in the Senate since the opposition leader came to the new position from the presidency of the Xunta and did not have a seat in Congress. In order for Feijoo to be able to have a presence in the upper house and be able to carry out his role as head of the opposition, he had to be appointed senator by regional designation. This fact, in addition, means that the leaders of the rest of the parties -UP, Vox, Ciudadanos- have not intervened since their position is in Congress.
This debate has taken place in a very special political environment. Practically all of the polls are predicting a considerable ascent of the PP, while the PSOE suffers greater wear every day. In this context, the Prime Minister has agreed to confront the popular leader while announcing that he will redouble his public interventions as the highest socialist official to turn the polls around.
These are the most outstanding phrases of both leaders:
