The test phase of the entrance fee in Venice has been running for several days – with success, as the revenue is already exceeding expectations.
Frankfurt – A new entry fee has been in effect in Venice since April 25th. The start was rather bumpy; at first it was accompanied by chaos. However, after the first eleven days of the test phase, financial success became apparent.
Because the entry fee has already brought in almost a million euros. In the first days of the test phase, 195,000 tickets were sold, resulting in revenue of 975,000 euros. This emerges from the statistics published by the city on Monday (May 6th).
Revenue of almost a million: tickets to Venice until July
This even exceeded the municipal administration’s expectations somewhat. Again Corriere del Veneto reported that the expected proceeds of 700,000 euros for the entire duration of the test were exceeded after just eight days.
An entry fee was charged in Venice from April 25th to May 5th, after which it will be paused until the weekend. The plan is to charge day guests a fee of five euros every Saturday and Sunday between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. until mid-July. To enter, visitors must purchase a QR code and download it to their cell phone. Failure to pay the fee could result in penalties of up to 300 euros. Locals, overnight guests, students and children under 14 are exempt from the fee. However, you need a free QR code.
A decision will be made this year as to whether the entry fee will be retained after the test phase. If it continues, the plan is to use the revenue to maintain infrastructure such as roads, canals and buildings. However, the costs of introducing the fee are currently higher than the revenue.
15 million guests annually in Venice: mass tourism causes problems
Venice welcomes around 15 million guests every year. Despite the financial benefits that mass tourism brings to the city, it is also fraught with problems. The high volume of visitors in the narrow streets around St. Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge often makes the places almost impassable. (cal/dpa)
