The last few weeks spent at home were special Aston Martin. The Silverstone team, which since the beginning of the season has been struggling terribly to make a car like the AMR22 work, decidedly not very competitive when compared to direct competitors in the center of the group, has finally managed to collect some good results thanks above all to Sebastian Vettel. The four-time German world champion, in fact, has collected world championship points in three of the last five races. A streak of results that culminated with the sixth place in Baku and which allowed Aston Martin to reach the Haas in the constructors’ standings with 15 points.
In parallel to the good results collected by Vettel, however, the crisis of Lance Stroll. In the first eight GPs of 2022, the Montreal native scored just two points, the result of two tenths places in Imola and Miami. Canada, which returns to the calendar for the first time since 2019, will be his home race. Stroll, however, while running in what is in effect the ‘family team’, could begin to feel a certain pressure on himself. In the opinion of the former British driver Johnny Herbertnow an appreciated TV commentator, Lawrence StrollLance’s father, should indeed seriously think of to put his son away.
“Lance has been having a bit of a tough time lately – said Herbert in a speech on the F1 Nation podcast – and I think there is a time for Lawrence to say ‘son, I gave you a chance. Not working. And I have to do what’s right for the team‘. I believe there will be a time when this will happenà – added the former bishop of Benetton and Stewart – I don’t know exactly when that will happen, but it’s up to Lance to do the work that’s required of him and do it consistently. At the moment, the situation is uncertain“.
An eventual footing by Lance Stroll at the end of the season, which would be sensational, could open the doors of Aston Martin to a young talent who was ‘cut off’ from the games for a seat in a top team: Pierre Gasly. “I think it should already be there – Herbert pointed out – he should already inquire about what they want to do and say ‘yes, I am ready and willing to come aboard‘. Sometimes pilots have to make tough decisions, so to speak. But career-wise it would be the right thing for him“.
