Footballer Rai Vloet of Heracles Almelo was arrested in the night from Saturday to Sunday for involvement in a serious accident on the A4. That confirms technical director Tim Gilissen of the Almelose Eredivisie club after reporting by The Telegraph. A 4-year-old boy was so seriously injured in the accident that he later died in hospital from his injuries, police said.
In the accident, two passenger cars collided with each other on the A4 near Rozenburg, near Schiphol and Hoofddorp, around 01:00 am. In one car was a man, a woman and their two young children. They were all transported to a hospital. In the other car were 26-year-old Vloet from Almelo and a 27-year-old man from Veldhoven. They may have been under the influence and were both arrested. The two were unharmed, were taken in for questioning and were still in custody on Sunday afternoon pending the investigation, a police spokesperson said. He cannot confirm which of the two was behind the wheel. “The investigation has to be done carefully and is still ongoing, that takes time,” said the spokesman, who confirms that blood is being taken from the two.
At Heracles Almelo, people are upset about the state of affairs. “We are very shocked by this news. Our thoughts go out to the family involved. We are silent about it,” says technical director Gilissen. He says he does not know whether Vloet was the driver of the car. Midfielder Vloet was trained at PSV and has been playing for Heracles since 2020, where he became the club’s top scorer with sixteen goals last season. He is the son of former football coach and director Wiljan Vloet.
