“Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is closely linked to the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and waste, driven by human activity, unsustainable consumption and production models. In Europe it causes every year 35 thousand deaths, 3 every minute, and Italy with its 10 thousand deaths per year has the worst situation In 2019, almost 5 million deaths worldwide were associated with antimicrobial resistance. The link between environmental issues and antimicrobial resistance is increasingly evident. This was said by the president of the Association of Doctors for the Environment (Isde Italia), Roberto Romizi, during the event promoted today by Isde Italia on the occasion of the 23rd edition of the Italian Environmental Medical Days, at the Office of the European Parliament in Rome, Italy.
“The striking thing is that in Italy, out of 100,000 inhabitants, we have 1.7 avoidable deaths due to alcohol, 6.2 due to road accidents, 32 due to cerebrovascular diseases and 18 due to antimicrobial resistance (Avoidable Mortality Index data, www.mortalitaevitabile.it /index.php/it). Hence the need to do more. There is no more time to waste”, he concludes.
