[Rassegna stampa] – The development of ‘political’ tensions around the world of Formula 1 is certainly not new in recent months, but in recent weeks the friction issues between the Circus and the International Federation – apparently resolved during Jean Todt’s long reign – have forcefully returned to occupy the debate table . This confrontation is shaking the entire system, which over the years has been based on a common collaboration between FIA, F1 (i.e. Liberty Media) and teams. As often happens in these situations the reason for the comparison is purely economicbut it also seems to be linked to the will of the newly elected president Ben Sulayem to distance himself as much as possible from everything that was the legacy of his predecessor.
Pretext of the confrontation between the parties is currently there Sprint race management. The Circus would like to expand the number, but the Federation wants more money to do so. An attitude considered unacceptable on the part of the teams, which behind the scenes have also returned to fear the idea of a sensational split, a topic that had not been talked about concretely since 2009. The problem is that the enormous growth in popularity – and therefore of economic income – in recent years F1 is seriously making the thought of ‘doing it alone’ assess at the top of the category, independently from the highest organ of world motoring. The delicate issue was also analyzed by the Italian press, in this article by the journalist of Corriere dello Sport Fulvio Solms.
“[…] Between the FIA and Formula 1 – in the sense of Liberty Media – the level of clash is growing: the promoter is very irritated by the extra request for money advanced by Ben Sulayem for the Sprints, who as a reason cites the economic burden of the overtime workload required for Saturday races. […] to the most onerous financial demands of the FIA, Liberty and the teams begin to weigh what their contribution is to the smooth running of the World Championship, and which that of the FIA. […] the Americans, together with some top-managers of the teams, have begun to think about the possibility of saying goodbye to the federal company […] and organize the World Cup by giving it an alternative name, […] GPOne or GP1. […]“.
