If you hear the word metaverse, could you measure the impact it has on the present and future? Although it does not have a definition agreed upon by the Royal Spanish Academy, it can be said that it refers to virtual worlds. Based on this technology, a school in Miami, United States, wants to innovate.
Classes in the metaverse
As Agustina Fainguersch, director of Meta for Latin America, told EL TIEMPO, the metaverse allows you to go to places that are difficult to visit, travel the world or interact with others, even attend concerts or sporting events… All through the Internet.
“We need to start giving access to new technologies that are going to help us connect in ways that are different from what we imagined,” he said for this newspaper.
In that line, Guillermo Cardona, rector of the Miami Virtual School, opened the (non-physical) doors of the educational institution. He is a Colombian with a Master’s in Education from the Javeriana University, who lives in the United States.

“It is a virtual environment where the human being has the possibility of developing a series of activities. Before, children learned using the pencil, then computers arrived and used the mouse. Now, they have the possibility to use the glasses in 3D. The metaverse in a virtual environment in three dimensions”, he explained to her in a chat with the local channel Univision.
The methodology is simple: instead of students being present in a classroom, they put on virtual glasses and can navigate different worlds, such as museums or they can see “the Earth in different angles, see the human body and interact with their academic peers”, while they are accompanied by their professors -that is to say in virtuality-.
For Cardona, In this case, technology has an educational and recreational objective, so he believes it is necessary not to classify it as negative. The use that little ones give it depends to a large extent on the control exercised by their parents.

“There is sense in the concern of parents. We have to be attentive and accompany children in this process. This will allow us to improve educational systems. The metaverse will help improve the quality of life of human beings,” reiterated.
The school admits boys and girls from the United States for elementary, middle, and high school grades. Cardona believes that Colombia cannot be left behind, so she hopes that education implements technologies so that students “learn from different and better manner“.
