sources revealed that HBO is actively discussing the development of a new prelude to game of Thrones about the conquest of Westeros by Aegon I Targaryens. As the project is in its early stages, there is currently no writer involved, although sources say the search is underway as HBO is interested in going ahead and getting it into production.
It is also said that the project may include a cinematographic component, that is, that HBO and Warner Bros. they would produce a movie that would later lead to the potential series, though plans remain uncertain at present.
The series would tell the story of how Aegon and his sister wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, used their army and three dragons to conquer six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros with the exception of Dorne. In doing so, Aegon II He became the first King of Westeros, the first to sit on the Iron Throne, and the founder of the targaryen dynasty.
Those events took place approximately 300 years before the events of game of Thrones. HBO declined to comment. This would be the last Westeros-based project in HBO. After the worldwide success of game of Thronesthe premium cable television service was mobilized to develop a series of series set in the world created by the author George R. R. Martin.
Of the many projects announced over the years, the only one that has advanced to date has been House of the Dragon. That series premiered its first season in August 2022, getting a quick renewal for Season 2 less than a week after it launched. Season 2 is currently in production.
The only other project game of Thrones who filmed any scenes to date was the abandoned pilot on the Long Night starring Naomi Watts. That project was ultimately scrapped in 2019, the same day the green light was given to House of the Dragon.
The expansion of the world game of Thrones and the possible movie connection is not surprising, as the show remains one of the most valuable intellectual properties in the library of Warner Bros. Discovery. Media companies have also been working for some time on building interconnected movie and TV universes around their biggest titles, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe of Disney the most prominent example. Warner Bros. Discovery is also currently working on a reboot of the DC Universe under the guidance of James Gunn and peter safran.
