Mercedes returns to pole
After 322 days, Mercedes regains pole position in Formula 1 and does so with George Russell, capable of interrupting a negative streak that has been going on since the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix. The Englishman will therefore park himself in the first spot on the starting grid, with the hope that the race dynamics can turn in his favor in Montreal.
Wolff’s analysis
“We are in pole position and it’s fantastic. Russell’s ride was super. As we’ve been saying for some time now, we’re going in the right direction. We have made small adjustments in the last few races, some more visible than others, but we are certainly moving towards a more high-performance car. Yesterday, however, we used the old wing and we were competitive in all conditions. We seem to have a better understanding of the car, but one swallow doesn’t make a summer. We need to keep our feet firmly planted on the ground.“
A comment on Hamilton
However, Mercedes did not attend the party Lewis Hamiltonwhich after a promising start to the weekend, saw its performance fade away right at the peak of the weekend.
For the 39-year-old English champion seventh place in qualifying in Canada is the worst result of his F1 career in Montreal and contributes to setting the Saturday home match with Russell at a terrible 1-8.
Wolff explained thus: “It looked like Lewis could take over and we could have both cars ahead of everyone. Then the others got closer and the time didn’t come for Lewis. We can’t understand what happened.”
