The presentation of the new Mercedes W13 represented the perfect opportunity for Lewis Hamilton and for the whole Brackley team to finally turn the page after the events in Abu Dhabi and the controversial decisions taken by Michael Masi which helped to direct the outcome of that race and consequently of the entire championship towards Max Verstappen. But if Toto Wolff did not fail to remove a few more pebbles from his shoes, attacking the now former F1 Race Director rather directly, Hamilton appeared absolutely focused on the new championship. The ambition to win the eighth title of his career now adds to a ferocious desire for revenge.
Speaking on the sidelines ofunveil of the car with which he and George Russell will compete this year, trying to win the team’s ninth consecutive constructors’ title, Hamilton explained that he had now metabolized the outcome of Yas Marina’s race. “What does not kill you only makes you stronger – declared # 44 – so I just put my focus on training, staying healthy and enjoying free time, because it passes quickly. Over the years I have learned how to be efficient with my time – added the native of Stevenage – with recovery and then with training, to rebuild both body and mind. I feel good, I feel fit. Of course, having an extra year of experience always helps “.
Hamilton ended the 2021 championship with an exceptional performance: three wins in a row – Brazil, Qatar and Saudi Arabia – which would have been four without Latifi’s accident in Abu Dhabi. Many had pointed out that at the end of last season there was perhaps the best Hamilton ever. But the person directly involved has relaunched the challenge, in what almost seems to be a warning to his opponents, Max Verstappen above all: “If you think what you saw at the end of last year was my best, wait until you see this year“. The hunt for rematch has begun.
