Halo soundtrack composers file lawsuit against Microsoft

Marty O’Donnell and Mike Salvatori have filed a lawsuit against Microsoft over the use of the soundtrack for the game Halo, released in 2001.

According to the lawsuit, the songs were used in other products involving the franchise in addition to the game Halo: Combat Evolved. The duo tried for 10 years to reach an agreement through talks, but since 2020 they have decided to go to court.

At the time of the game’s release, the duo worked for Bungie, but were never actual employees of the company, which was later bought by Microsoft. For them, the use of the soundtrack after the game’s release could only happen through a licensing agreement with royalties paid to the creators.

This month a conciliation hearing is scheduled between the parties to prevent the dispute from going to court.
