LOS ANGELES, United States (Variety.com) – “Halloween Kills” topped the weekend’s North American box office with a $50.3 million debut, a strong performance considering the film is being released simultaneously in the US. theaters and via streaming via the Peacock service, Netflix’s rival in the United States.
This type of distribution strategy has depressed ticket sales in recent months, with films like “Cry Macho: The Path to Redemption” and “Suicidal Squad” not attracting high audiences to theaters when they were made available at the same time on HBO Max.
A theater-only release was not enough to save “The Last Duel,” a historic epic starring Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
The drama, set in 14th-century France, grossed a pallid $4.8 million against a production cost of more than $100 million. The result showed that older audiences remain fearful of returning to theaters while Covid-19 and its variants are still circulating.
The film was inherited by Walt Disney after the purchase of 20th Century Fox Studios in 2019. Directed by Ridley Scott. The critics were kind, but that didn’t save the film, which is limping to finish fifth at the box office.
