Curtis Zy-Keith Means, a 16-month-old baby weighing just 420 grams at birth, was voted the world’s most premature baby to survive, reported Guinness World Records. The baby from Alabama, USA, was born after his mother went into labor at just 21 weeks (4.8 months). Means was born on July 5, 2020 after his mother was taken to hospital for emergency surgery.

Michelle “Chelle” Butler told Guinness World Records that medical staff have reported that they ‘normally don’t keep babies that age’. However, Curtis responded to the treatment and after 275 days (about 9 months) of being seen by the staff of the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Women’s and Children’s Center. His mother added that ‘he is very active’. Curtis Zy-Keith Means was discharged from the hospital on April 6, 2021.
Dr. Colm Travers, assistant professor in the Division of Neonatology at UAB, reported that when he first saw Curtis he was so small and was surprised to see the baby alive at such a young age. Dr. Brian Sims, a professor of pediatrics at UAB Hospital who served the twins, said statistics show that children born so young have virtually no chance of survival.
