Thousands of protesters gathered this Sunday in Granada in a “multitudinous” protest in defense of public health called by the Justice for Health Association, which included a tribute to the figure of the founder of this organization, the doctor Jesús Candel, died in October 2022, and who became known as Spiriman on social networks in the dissemination of the mass mobilizations against the hospital merger, which was repealed.
As the secretary of the platform, Antonio Barrera, told Europa Press, around 20,000 people attended the protest event, although the National Police estimates the total number of protesters at around 3,000, explained the Government Subdelegation in Granada.
Among other reasons that have “forced” the organization to mobilize on this day, Barrera argues the current situation of waiting lists, the “closed lists” of health professionals, or the “amount of resources that are being sent to the private”, as well as the general state of the Andalusian public health system. Likewise, Barrera explained that Candel has been honored by releasing a balloon into the sky and projecting an “emotional” video about his figure at the end of the demonstration on a giant screen.
For “dignified and quality” public healthcare in the face of a “deadly wounded” model
This platform indicated in a press release, in which it called on the entire society to participate in the demonstration, that the objective of this event was to ask for “dignified and quality” public healthcare, in the face of a healthcare model that, in the opinion of the association, “is, today, mortally wounded.”
This platform warned that “we are witnessing the beginning of the end of public healthcare in Andalusia as we know it, because public healthcare money is being diverted, in huge and ever-increasing quantities, to private sector concerts. precisely, due to the inability to manage public health, and for applying a public-private model” from the Board.
Furthermore, they alluded to “the devastating reports of the Intervention on the purchases of the logistics platforms of the Andalusian Health Service, in a sample and on a tiny number of files, which demonstrate that the controls on the purchases of the Public Health System of Andalusia”, as this newspaper revealed.
