Google has confirmed that the launch of Android 16 will occur during the second quarter of 2025. The Mountain View company seeks to promote innovation within its mobile ecosystem. It has said that the preview and beta version of its new operating system (OS) will be available to developers “very soon.”
The decision represents a notable change in the usual calendar of the big tech. The firm usually releases major updates to its mobile OS in the last half of each year. The public and stable edition of Android 15 arrived on Pixel family devices in mid-October. The adaptation of the OS for phones from other manufacturers will occur in the coming months.
The planned change in the roadmap aims to align major Android updates with the release schedule of the smartphones from third parties. The intention is to ensure that more teams can obtain the latest variant of the platform sooner. Google assures that with this it will be possible to achieve “faster innovation in applications and devices, with greater stability and improvements for users and developers.”
The technology company has anticipated that it will publish a kit development of software (SDK) for Android 16 between October and December 2025. This “will incorporate feature updates, optimizations, and bug fixes,” he notes.
Google also announced improvements to the Play Store that will allow users to share preferences to personalize the recommendations they receive from the apps. He reported that more new features from his Gemini AI will be integrated into Android Studio to facilitate writing and documenting application code.
What is known about Android 16
Information about the features that the next version of Google’s mobile operating system will have is still scarce. The first Quarterly Platform Update (QPR) of Android 15 has given some clues in this regard.
The specialized medium Android Authority points out that Android 16 will integrate a function called “bubble anything”. This would allow setting any app installed in the smartphone in a floating bubble to use in the background while browsing any other program.
The notification panel would add a new “Priority Mode”. The configuration would be useful to create specific rules about certain types of alerts being displayed on the screen. Users could choose to receive calls only from specific contacts or notifications from apps particulars for predefined times or in particular situations.
The revision would add new quick controls to activate WiFi networks and Bluetooth connections from the home screen. This would eliminate the need to enter the “Settings” section to manage these functions.
