Golf | The International Sports Federation excludes Russian and Belarusian amateur golf championships

The professional golf clubs have not yet taken a formal position on participation restrictions.

International the Golf Federation (IGF) excludes Russian and Belarusian players from international competitions in the sport.

National officials are also not invited to IGF competitions. In practice, this is especially true of the World Championships in Amateur in Paris in late summer 2020, where registration will end in the coming weeks.

The IOC recommendation does not necessarily apply to professional players or competitions in national member associations.

For the time being, these bodies may allow Russians or Belarusians to take part in their competitions as individual athletes without any national symbols, colors or flags.

“In practice, the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian golfers from international events will not have much of an impact on the results of those events,” IGF board member Antti Peltoniemi says.

Peltoniemi has been on the board of the IGF since 2012. He is also the former chairman of the Finnish Golf Association and the European Golf Association.

The IGF mainly manages amateur golf and the Olympic Games.

“The decision was right, given the recommendations of the IOC, and it is a sign of the solidarity of the golfing people,” says Peltoniemi.

The professional golf clubs have not yet taken a formal position on participation restrictions.
