It is coming to exasperation. This is clear from the latest statements by Ron Gilbert after the insults (there is no talk of criticism) received for the change of style that took place in Tales of the Monkey Islandwhich prompted the famous author to stop talking about the game until its release.
A few hours later, complaints from Santa Monica’s Estelle Tigani also arrived about some users sending photos of their genitals to force her to reveal the release date of God of War: Ragnarok. In the face of these events, the support of the whole industry has arrived, lined up entirely against an audience that obviously does not know the meaning of freedom of speech and above all of respect.
As stated for example by Alex Mann, development director of EA, this is the cause that pushes various software houses not to disclose anything about their work. Druckmann also intervened in support of Gilbert, stating:
“Wow! Even healthy adventure games aren’t safe from toxic fans who know more and more about the authors ?! Ron (and the team), keep doing what you believe in! It looks fantastic! I’ll take it at the fucking launch!”
Screenwriter Alanah Pearce has instead pointed the finger at the nonsense of knowing a release date:
“Yelling at people about video game launch dates doesn’t do any good. Even if you get a date by threatening people (it will never happen), you still have nothing to gain by knowing it before the development team tells you.”
The question is therefore becoming increasingly harsh and clearly, not only for video games. But in this case, there are peaks of hysteria among the truly ridiculous fans and we must never forget that together with freedom of speech there is also the responsibility of speech. Severe measures would be needed which, however, will hardly be taken.
