The federal deputy and president of the Workers’ Party (PT), Gleisi Hoffmann, said, last Sunday, the 16th, that the use of ivermectin could be the cause of the outbreak of scabies, also known as scabies, in Balneário Camboriú (SC).
Gleisi used the social network X (formerly Twitter) to talk about the subject. According to her, the popularization of the medicine during the pandemic would have resulted in the spread of the disease in the city.
“An outbreak of scabies in Santa Catarina may be related to the indiscriminate use of ivermectin, as ordered by the ineligible population during the pandemic, without any scientific evidence. He, the biggest propagator of fake news”, writes the parliamentarian who blames the former President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), for encouraging the use of the medicine.
The Center for Pharmacotherapy Studies (NEF) at the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL) published a study in 2021 that analyzed how the sacorpes scabiei mite, which is responsible for the spread of the disease, gains resistance from exposure to the medicine. However, pharmacist Sabrina Neves, one of those responsible for the content, explained to Estadão that this is a hypothesis and more studies are needed.
“To prove that it is scabies caused by a resistant mite, a specific study must be carried out, both on the parasite and clinical studies with the correct diagnosis of patients, and treatment monitoring to then assess whether there is resistance to the conventional treatment. This requires caution and method,” he said.
The health doctor at the Camboriú Health Department, Rodrigo Emydio, stated that there is no evidence of this relationship in the city, as transmission in the region is limited to a specific group.
Situation in Camboriú
To date, 43 cases of the disease have been recorded in the municipality. Starting on June 6, the outbreak has already caused the closure of two schools, the Sementes do Ajante and Rio das Ostras Early Childhood Education Centers (NEI). According to municipal management, classes are expected to resume next Monday, the 24th, and the locations are being sanitized.
Scabies is an infectious disease transmitted through contact between humans or through contact with contaminated objects, such as clothing, for example. Symptoms may appear between 1 and 42 days after infection. The infection causes itching, itching, and skin lesions and is treated with topical and oral medications after professional evaluation.
