The birth of the new Gigafactory of Stellantis in Italy it is not so obvious. The third battery hub that the group is expected to build at the Termoli plant was announced several months ago but after major proclamations, in particular from the Italian government, it was Carlos Tavares to curb the enthusiasm regarding the birth of the pole that will produce batteries for electric cars. The CEO of Stellantis in fact addressed an appeal to the Italian executive to undertake to support the transition through new incentives and after the visit to the Molise plant he underlined how “The agreement with the government for the Gigafactory of Termoli is not yet closed.”
Just during his stop at the industrial site in the province of Campobasso, Tavares also had the opportunity to meet the trade unions who did not hide their concern for the inaction shown to date by the Executive: “The government and local authorities, pending the election of the President of the Republic, take care of the industrial future of the car which remains one of the resources for the country – said Giorgio Airaudo, general secretary of Fiom Piemonte – Stellantis is pressing the government for incentives for electric and hybrid cars. It is not possible to deal with a multinational, one of the five most important car manufacturers in the world, simply to collect its requests without a national plan for the car that provides support for the sector, also for the components on which savings and costs are downloaded. and they risk paying the highest price. We need a plan that agrees investments in Italy for all sites. “
Another alarm bell is related to the Italian production costs, which once again were targeted by Tavares because they were deemed too high: “A year ago, I noticed that in Italy the cost of producing a car was significantly higher, sometimes double, compared to factories in other European countries, despite a lower labor cost. This has to do with the organization of production, which needs to be improved. If we apply the good practices that exist in our group to Italy, Italy itself will have good potential. “
