Camaraderie between pilots
The camaraderie between the WEC championship drivers is quite evident to anyone who frequents the world endurance championship paddock. The still very genuine dimension of this championship means that there is mutual respect and professionalism between the drivers, even from opposing teams, but also the desire to have fun and not always take themselves too seriously. As evidence of this, an episode that occurred during the post-race press conference deserves to be mentioned.
The highlight for Koba
Kamui Kobayashiofficial driver of the Toyota GR010 #7, second classified just over fourteen seconds behind the Ferrari 499P #50, reported a curious fact that occurred on the track during the night of the race in a phase of struggle with Antonio Fuoco aboard the Ferrari which would later prove victorious. When asked what his highlight of the race was, he replied:
“I overtook Antonio entering Indianapolis Curve in the middle of the night at 320 km/h, which was really impressive. I did this [il gesto della dito medio ndr] out the window and he saw me. We looked into each other’s eyes as I did so, because he turned to look at me from his window and nodded as if to say “Ok”! After the race he asked me who was in the car and I said it was me! This was the highlight of my race”. All this obviously aroused the laughter of the journalists who applauded amidst the laughter of Fuoco and Kobayashi themselves.
