German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged to continue his country’s solidarity with Ukraine as long as necessary.
In statements to the second channel of German television “ZDF”, Schulz said, “I think that it can only work with the support of the people, but I think that this support will be available for a very long time, and that we will be able to maintain Germany’s solidarity with Ukraine for as long as necessary.”
He added that Germany is committed to this solidarity for its own good.
Schulz defended the sanctions against Russia.
Politicians from the Left Party and the Alternative for Germany party had recently called for the lifting of sanctions imposed on Russia or the operation of the “Nord Stream 2” line to avoid an energy crisis before winter.
There are fears in Germany that Russia could completely halt gas supplies to the country this month.
Energy and food prices were skyrocketing in Germany.
